IAG welcomes $800 million Northern Rivers Resilience Homes Fund package

IAG today welcomed the Federal and NSW Government’s $800 million Northern Rivers Resilient Homes Fund package which will help protect people across the region from the devastating impacts of flooding.

The voluntary buyback scheme will be offered to Northern Rivers residents who live in the most vulnerable areas where flooding poses a catastrophic risk to life.

The package will also support residents by providing $100,000 for homeowners to raise their house or up to $50,000 to retrofit properties in areas where the flood risk can be reduced by meeting higher building standards.

The measures will be available to residents in the local government areas of Lismore, Ballina, Byron, Clarence Valley, Kyogle, Richmond Valley and Tweed.

IAG Managing Director and CEO Nick Hawkins welcomed the investment by the Federal and State governments to protect lives and properties across the region.

This is a significant investment by the Federal and State governments which will ultimately save lives and help protect people and communities across the Northern Rivers.

“The flooding we’ve seen in the region this year has been devastating and it’s critical we do everything we can to protect people now and into the future.

“Land buybacks are an important measure to help people move from the areas most at risk from flooding but we understand these are difficult decisions for people whose families have lived in these homes for generations. So, it’s important we continue to support them through this process.

“IAG looks forward to working with the Federal and NSW Governments to ensure that the implementation of this program substantially reduces flood risk in the Northern Rivers.”

IAG will continue to support governments at all levels with identifying further options to help protect the Northern Rivers community from the devastating impacts of flooding.
