Renowned youth development specialist Ian Crook has been appointed Football Australia’s Head of Men’s Football, a senior leadership role overseeing the technical direction of the men’s game across player development, coach education and competitions.
Having worked at virtually every level of the game, Crook brings nearly three decades of coaching and technical experience in Australian football. His career spans the NSL and A-League eras, from academy football to senior club and national team programs, and he has built trusted relationships with clubs, Member Federations and leagues along the way.
His senior coaching roles have included Northern Spirit, Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC. Abroad, he coached at Japanese club Avispa Fukuoka, returned to Norwich City as first-team coach and has also coached in Oceania.
Crook’s honours include NSL Coach of the Year and helping Sydney FC win the inaugural A-League Championship. He was also assistant to the current CommBank Socceroos Head Coach Tony Popovic when Western Sydney Wanderers won the 2014 AFC Champions League.

Youth development has been at the heart of Crook’s technical work. He spent eight years at the Wanderers, including leading the club’s academy as Technical Director. He has also held roles with Football NSW, NSWIS and Manly United, and has been with Football Australia since 2023 as Elite Programs Manager.
In his new role, Crook will report directly to Executive Director of Football Heather Garriock, providing strategic and systems leadership across the men’s game and the broader Football Department.
Before moving into coaching, Crook was a Norwich City great, making 418 appearances for the English club after starting his career at Tottenham Hotspur, and was capped by England B, before moving to Australia where he began coaching in 1999.
