Improving Cullen Bay From Bottom Up

One of Darwin’s premiere destinations for tourists and locals has been given an important community facility upgrade.

The new $500,000 Cullen Bay toilet block funded by the City of Darwin was today officially flushed into use by Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis and Cullen Bay Marina Corporation Chief Executive Carmen King.

Previously there was no public toilet facility available at the popular harbour-side destination that hundreds of thousands of locals and visitors come to each year to enjoy picnics and drinks against the backdrop of Darwin’s famous sunsets.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said such projects are important for improving the amenity, accessibility, and useability of public spaces across the municipality.

“It’s funny to think how public toilets help support tourism in Darwin, but that’s exactly what the functionality of this facility in this popular location is doing,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“Great loos in tourism destinations become talking points, encourage repeat visits and can be a positive indicator of how a host community respects tourists.”

“The thoughtful design of the new facility has provided a public loo with LED lighting, low flush toilets, access ramps and personality.”

It includes five toilets in total including three unisex toilets, a parents room toilet with dedicated change table and the spacious amenities of an accessible toilet made for easy use by visitors with disabilities and their carers.

The project was another substantial injection of funds into the local economy during the Covid period with Nightcliff Builders engaged to construct the facility.

Cullen Bay Marina Corporation Chief Executive Carmen King said the facility helped visitors to more enjoy visiting the beachside area.

“The new contemporary designed toilet block will enable increased activation of the area through events, picnics, sporting & social gatherings,” Ms King said.
