Surf Coast Shire Council Mayor Rose Hodge will be a canvas for mental health and wellbeing conversations as part of the Art of the Minds festival.

The festival’s official launch on Thursday 10 October will see Cr Hodge’s portrait painted live by decorated local artist Jacki Burke. Held on World Mental Health Day, the launch will also welcome entertainment by One Spirit African drummers.

The month-long Art of the Minds will feature a wide range of events in and around Torquay, including talks, art exhibitions, a meditation and wellbeing retreat, a community ball, a golf day and much more.

This year’s focus is ‘Celebrating creative community conversations and connections in recovery’. It will highlight the importance of mental wellbeing in the community.

Cr Hodge said one of Council’s goals was to support people to be healthy and active.

“This includes mental wellbeing, which can often be a complex topic for people to address,” she said.

“Art of the Minds is offering an opportunity for people to talk about mental illness and how we can support each other.

“I’m excited to see the inspiring discussions that are going to take place during October as part of the festival. I encourage people to look at the huge calendar of events, and pick something they’re interested in to attend. It’s a fabulous way to connect with your community.”

Art of the Minds is sponsored by Council through the Event Grants Program. Visit www.artoftheminds.org.au for details, including the full calendar of events.
