In Tight Spot

A routine traffic stop in central Auckland resulted in the seizure of firearms and cash, but also cocaine allegedly concealed in a man’s underwear.

Mid-afternoon on Thursday saw Police stop an Audi motor vehicle, that should not have been operating on a road, on Hobson Street.

While impound procedures were underway, the driver’s associate arrived to pick him up.

Auckland City Central Area Commander, Inspector Grae Anderson says the Audi driver allegedly removed items from his vehicle and placed them into the vehicle belonging to the associate.

He also allegedly attempted to destroy evidential material and began resisting arrest during this time.

“Both the Audi driver and his associate were detained and searches of their vehicles invoked.”

During the searches, officers located a substantial sum of money and two firearms.

Both drivers were arrested. On arrival at the District Custody Unit, a search of the Audi driver’s person located several bags of cocaine concealed in his underwear.

“This result highlights the value of proactive policing, with a traffic stop removing illicit drugs and illegal firearms from our streets.

“Police are committed to preventing these items from reaching our communities and causing harm,” Inspector Anderson says.
