South West Rocks came alive over the weekend at the unforgettable event Sky Stories, celebrating the rich culture of the Dunghutti/Thunggutti people.
What started as a vision turned into reality as hundreds of residents attended Sky Stories on Saturday 22 July to experience Dunghutti/Thunggutti culture through a captivating array of art, music, and storytelling.
The event kicked off with a moving opening ceremony, featuring performances by talented artists like Multilingual singer Manduway. Aunty Cheryl Blair delivered a warm Welcome to Country, and students from Melville and Kempsey High School showcased their dance talents. The iconic Brolga Dance by Nancy Pattison added to the cultural significance of the evening. What made this opening ceremony even more special was the beautifully lit praying mantis, the Dunghutti/Thunggutti totem, installed right next to the stage.
Attendees were treated to a delightful journey along the footpath, where captivating displays awaited at every turn. The Rainbow Serpent, Dhulawang Girin, and the Seven Sisters Lights, Matan Gilayn, adorned the path, creating a magical atmosphere. Neon Yarri, a mesmerising koala light installation, could be seen from across Saltwater Creek, and Buralgan, the Brolga, stood proudly on the hill of Horseshoe Reserve.
Throughout the night, Elders shared captivating stories, connecting the community to its cultural roots. The roaming Gabby the Turtle and the sky knowledge shared by the Port Macquarie Observatory added an educational and delightful touch to the event.
The success of Sky Stories owes much to the hard work of the South West Rocks Figtree Descendants Aboriginal Corporation, event organisers, artists, local schools and volunteers, who poured their hearts into making this celebration possible. Their talent and hard work certainly shone.
Congratulations to everyone involved for making this event truly special and for fostering a deeper connection with the local heritage in the Kempsey Shire. The memories created on this enchanting night will surely resonate with the attendees for years to come.
