Infrastructure delivery is meeting development requirements

Council’s investment in truck infrastructure to support urban development in Cairns is ahead of the State Government’s requirements.

That is according to a review of the Cairns Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP), which Council is required to undertake every five years.

The LGIP is part of the planning scheme and identifies Council’s plans for trunk infrastructure to service development at a desired standard in a coordinated, efficient and financially sustainable manner.

It uses assumptions about the scale of development, infrastructure demands and assumed population growth to help identify infrastructure requirement to support development.

Key Infrastructure that forms part of the LGIP includes water supply, wastewater and sewage, footpaths and cycleways, and open spaces and community facilities.

In May 2021, Council started a LGIP review, which determined that trunk infrastructure across Cairns was 18-months to three years ahead of requirements.

Advice from the office of the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning has also recommended Council undertake further infrastructure planning for the Cairns South State Development Area.

In response, Council will write to the Minister to commence discussions on a potential partnership for planning and delivery of the infrastructure necessary to support development of the Cairns South SDA.
