Injury in custody at Granville, QLD

Police are investigating an incident resulting in a man sustaining critical injuries at Granville overnight.

Around 11pm, officers were called to a local park in relation to a man needing assistance.

Upon arrival, officers observed the man, who ran from police into the Granville State School with a jerry can and a lighter.

When approached by police the man doused himself with petrol.

Officers attempted to communicate with the man, however the incident resulted in the male igniting.

Police rendered immediate assistance, however the man received significant injuries from burns and was transported to the Maryborough Hospital.

The man has been airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

This matter is under investigation by Ethical Standards Command and is subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
