Campaspe Shire Council has appointed experienced local government executive Craig Niemann as Interim Chief Executive Officer while recruitment is undertaken for a permanent Chief Executive Officer.

The appointment will provide continuity and stability during the transition, following the departure of current Chief Executive Officer Pauline Gordon who will conclude her role later this month as she takes up a new executive leadership position at the City of Boroondara.

Campaspe Shire Mayor, Cr Daniel Mackrell said Mr Niemann brings extensive experience in local government leadership and governance.

“Craig is a highly respected local government leader with a strong track record of executive leadership and organisational stewardship.

“He served for many years as Chief Executive Officer at the City of Greater Bendigo and has continued to support councils across Victoria through a range of interim chief executive appointments and board roles.

“Council is pleased to appoint someone of Craig’s calibre to lead the organisation during this important transition period,” Cr Mackrell said.

Since concluding his role at the City of Greater Bendigo in December 2023, Mr Niemann has held Interim Chief Executive Officer positions at Horsham Rural City Council and Glenelg Shire Council, while also serving on several boards and most recently contracted to review Campaspe Port Enterprise (CPE).

Cr Mackrell said this involvement had given Mr Niemann a strong understanding of the organisation, the region and Council’s current priorities.

“Craig’s recent work with CPE means he already has valuable knowledge of local communities and the opportunities and challenges ahead.

“He brings strong governance expertise, significant senior leadership experience and a calm, considered approach that will help guide Council through the recruitment and transition process,” he said.

Mr Niemann will commence in the role in late August.

Cr Mackrell also thanked outgoing Chief Executive Officer Pauline Gordon for her outstanding service and leadership during her time with Campaspe Shire Council.

“On behalf of Council, I would like to sincerely thank Pauline for her dedication, professionalism and commitment to our communities. Pauline has led the organisation through significant challenges and opportunities, including flood recovery, major projects and important organisational reforms, and leaves a strong legacy for Campaspe Shire,” Cr Mackrell said.
