Interim excess rubbish drop-off at Ops Centre

In the midst of the global Coronavirus pandemic, with high numbers of people working from home, self-isolating or being in quarantine, Council has established an interim weekly excess rubbish drop-off service at the Operations Centre commencing this Saturday.

In these exceptional circumstances, Council recognises that some households may generate higher volumes of household waste. The drop-off service will support Hobsons Bay residents to dispose of their additional volumes of rubbish at no charge.

The drop-off station is unable to accept mixed recycling, food and garden waste, hard waste or electronic waste.

Strict social distancing measures will be in place, in line with state and federal government requirements and clear, easy to follow instructions will be provided by staff on site. Residents will not need to touch anything, they will only need to drop their tied, secured rubbish bags (bags cannot be open or overflowing) into a garbage disposal bay.

Advice from the state government has confirmed that waste drop-offs are part of the waste service the Chief Medical Officer has deemed an essential service in the current state of emergency. Council will continue to monitor government directions and will provide updates accordingly if there are changes.

Council is also progressing arrangements for other interim options to support households through this challenging time. Council hopes to offer additional or upsized rubbish bins to large households who may require them. Additional bins have been ordered however, this is reliant on supply chains in an unpredictable environment, there may be delays before this becomes available. Further interim options will be announced when they are confirmed.

While Council’s Recycling 2.0 scheduled kerbside waste and recycling collections and processors are continuing as usual, they have been required to stagger their shifts to meet social distancing requirements in the workplace. Therefore, collections will start slightly earlier at 5am.

We ask for your patience if there are any delays and your street’s bins aren’t collected. If this occurs, please leave your bins on the kerbside and we will come to collect them in the following days, including Saturday.
