Interim Heritage Order for former Corrimal Coke Works site

Wollongong City Council has made an Interim Heritage Order under the NSW Heritage Act for the former Corrimal Coke Works site on Railway Street, Corrimal.

Council has taken this action to ensure that the heritage significance of the site can be properly considered in finalising a Planning Proposal for the site, prior to the progression of any demolition works on the site.

In April 2018, Council resolved to prepare and exhibit a draft Planning Proposal for the site to allow a mix of medium density housing. This resolution included the progression of a draft Heritage Listing for certain buildings and structures. The resolution also required the preparation of additional heritage (and other) studies, followed by a public exhibition process.

The Interim Heritage Order, which was published in the Government Gazette on Monday 20 May, provides interim protection for a six-month period under the NSW Heritage Act and will allow for the progression of the draft Planning Proposal process.

The Order places Council as the consent authority for any proposed demolition or modification works.

Council will continue to work with the Illawarra Coke Company and Legacy Property on this matter.
