International Women’s Day Fundraiser to support victims of Domestic Violence

Elena Ambrose, owner of Siberia Bar & Restaurant, to give all income to Zahra Foundation.

Local Adelaide businesswoman, Elena Ambrose has a deep-rooted passion about International Women’s Day from her upbringing in Yekaterinburg, Siberia. From its first celebration in Russia in 1913, International Women’s Day has become a public holiday in Russia, where women are celebrated across the whole country including Siberia.

Now the owner and head chef of Siberia on East Terrace in the CBD, Elena wanted to use her passion for food to celebrate the achievements of women, raise awareness against bias and act to establish equality. So, she is holding a fundraiser luncheon on March 8, 2021 at Siberia Bar and Restaurant and is giving 100% of all income to the Zahra Foundation to support the victims of Domestic Violence.

The keynote speakers will be Anastasia Tomich, Chief Development Officer, Disaster Relief Australia; Atena Abrahimzadeh from Zahra Foundation and journalist Lauren Novak, Social Policy Editor for The Advertiser and Sunday Mail.

“Using our gifts and talents is the best way Women can support Women”, Elena said. “Helping to end Domestic Violence against Women and Children is definitely a cause, where together, we can make a difference and I cannot think of a better day to make a difference together than International Women’s Day!”

Elena launched Siberia in February 2020 at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, and then in March 2020, only one month later, her own dreams were put on hold as she had to close the restaurant for six months, along with all other restaurants due to the COVID pandemic.

“My dream was to launch a restaurant that would bring the flavours and foods of the Siberian forests where I grew up, to my new adopted hometown and love, Adelaide,” said Elena. “COVID set us back, but we did not let that stop us and neither should anyone else. So now I want to give back and use my talents to help others.”

“We are so pleased to be the beneficiary of Siberia Restaurant’s International Women’s Day charity luncheon. Their generosity will allow us to continue to empower women’s financial independence. The more tickets sold to this thoughtful charity lunch will help provide additional programs and services to women recovering from domestic and family violence”, said Zahra Foundation’s General Manager Gemma Burdon.

“The Zahra Foundation was established in 2015 following the tragic murder of Zahra Abrahimzadeh, who was killed by her former husband in 2010 after enduring 20 years of domestic violence. They are a South Australian based charity supporting women and children affected by domestic and family violence and specifically address the financial abuse and disadvantage many women experience as a result of domestic violence. So, I can’t think of a better charity to support.”

Tickets are $75 per person, and fully tax deductable as all monies (100%) of the ticket sales are going directly to the Zahra Foundation. Bookings available on The Fork – https://www.thefork.com.au/restaurant/siberia-r629313
