A Professional Standards investigation is underway after a man died while being held in the Hobart Reception Centre.
Hobart Reception Centre staff reported the matter to police about 11am this morning, after the man was found unresponsive in his cell.
Unfortunately, attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
The deceased was 23 years old, from New Norfolk.
He had been arrested in New Norfolk at 4pm yesterday in relation to the wounding incident at Curlew Parade, Claremont, on Friday 14 August. He was arrested without incident and taken to the Hobart Reception Centre.
A Professional Standards investigation is now underway into the circumstances of the death, a report will be prepared for the Coroner and the Integrity Commission will be notified.
“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts go out to the deceased man’s family and loved ones, at this difficult time,” said Assistant Commissioner Doug Oosterloo.
