Investigation into suspicious shop fire in Burwood

An investigation is underway following a suspicious fire in Burwood overnight.

About 1.25am today (Tuesday 7 July 2020), emergency services were called to George Street following reports a barber shop was well alight.

Officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command attended and have been told a vehicle reversed into the shopfront, where an unknown man exited the vehicle and entered the store before driving away. A second vehicle was also seen fleeing the scene at the time.

At the same time, a fire has engulfed the building.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended, and the blaze was extinguished.

The vehicles are described as silver or grey sedans. One vehicle drove west on George Street, before turning into Park Road and the second drove east.

No persons were inside the building at the time and no injuries have been reported.

George Street between Elsie Street and John Street is closed as investigations continue.

A crime scene has been established and as inquiries continue, anyone with information about the incident, or who may have seen two vehicles driving away from the location, is urged to contact police.
