Investing in Tasmania Police and keeping our communities safe

Members,

The Rockliff Liberal Government continues to invest in Tasmania Police to support our officers and keep our communities safe.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said this includes over $100 million in an infrastructure investment program to provide emergency workers with state-of-the-art infrastructure to work and live from.

“In the past 18 months we have opened three new police stations, two emergency management centres, built and renovated several police houses around the State, and established two new dedicated facilities for our Special Operations Group,” Minister Ellis said.

This includes the following investments:

  • $5 million for Longford Police Station
  • $5 million for New Norfolk Police Station
  • $4.6 million for the northern and southern Special Operations Group facilities
  • $7 million for the Launceston Police Station redevelopment,
  • $12 million for the Sorell Emergency Services Hub,
  • $6.5 million for the Emergency Management Centre,
  • $22.9 million to upgrade police housing around Tasmania,
  • $4.1 million to upgrade the Tasmania Police Academy,
  • $12.5 million for the Bridgewater Police Station,
  • $1 million for the Rosebery Police Station, and
  • $7.5 million for the St Helens Police Station.

“In the past month, through an investment of $15.1 million, Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for Women and the Prevention of Family Violence, and I were humbled to open the Government’s new Arch Centres for victim-survivors of family and sexual violence in Hobart and Launceston.

“I am also proud to say that there have never been more police in Tasmania than there are today and Tasmania has the highest number of police per capita than any other jurisdiction in Australia.

“Just last week we welcomed a record 74 new recruits as constables of Tasmania Police with 26 to be stationed in the North-West, 16 stationed in the North and 32 stationed in the South.”

Minister Ellis said that while the Rockliff Liberal Government invests record amounts into our police force and community law and order, many Tasmanians still remember the former Labor-Green Government which sacked 10 per cent of our police and 25 per cent of the support staff, cut key operational areas, and left stations and police houses to rot.
