Investing in Territory Trainees to Boost Digital Industry

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is helping young Territorians into digital careers and growing the Territory’s digital capacity with a Cross Sector Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Traineeship Program.

Currently in its pilot phase, this is a joint initiative with the ICT Industry Association of NT (ICTNT) under the Digital Territory Strategy and Action Plan, with $230,000 allocated to help young Territorians start their digital careers with a local digital business.

The program aims to provide more investment in the training and development of young Territorians, increase the number of ICT trainees in the NT, and support local digital industry growth and capability.

The program is open to any local digital business that employs, or intends to employ ICT trainees in the NT.

The funding will support them to invest in training initiatives to develop Territory talent and trainees will also undertake a three month in-house placement with the NT Government.

The program recognises future skills requirements for the digital industry and the significant opportunities for economic growth by overcoming the traditional barrier of remoteness, as identified as a Territory Economic Reconstruction priority.

The first cohort of trainees recently commenced with New Future IT, NEC and Kinetic IT with more traineeships currently available.

Businesses and Territorians can express their interest in the program by contacting [[email protected]] or calling 0488 785 328.

Quotes from Minister for Corporate and Digital Development, Ngaree Ah Kit:

“The Territory Labor Government is developing skills locally as we work towards a $40 billion economy by 2030.

“We know that digital skills will be in high demand and that home grown talent and career path development is the best way to grow local industries to reach this economic target.

“The ICT sector will play a significant role, both with growth in its own right and also enabling other industries to grow by giving them tools to expand, overcome remoteness and access new markets.

“We are investing now to be ready for the future and helping young Territorians into careers along the way.”

Quotes from ICTNT CDU Liaison, Damien Charles:

“Digital skills are critical to supporting NT businesses and ICT Traineeships are an important pathway for young Territorians to enter the ICT industry and help business deal with our current and future skills shortages.

“We see this joint ICT Industry Association of the NT and Northern Territory Government program as providing further much needed investment and opportunity for both young Territorians and ICT businesses in the Territory.”

Quotes from New Future IT Executive Director, Jesse Leal:

“The ICT Traineeship initiative from the Northern Territory Government has supported New Future IT to offer more traineeships than commercially feasible.

“The experience our trainees gain in the three month placements with the NT Government enhances their capacity to transition to a full time role in ICT in the Northern Territory on completion of their traineeships.

“Our mission is to Create Opportunity through Technology for Territorians and we thank the Northern Territory Government for this initiative that supports us to continue this mission.”
