Is your business allergy aware?

27 June 2019

Mornington Peninsula Shire encouraged the Mornington Peninsula community and food businesses to help raise awareness and take action during this year’s Food Allergy Week (23 May – 1 June).

Did you know Australia has one of the highest reported incidences of food allergies in the world, with one in 10 babies born developing a food allergy?

Food Allergy Week is an important annual initiative of Allergens and Anaphylaxis Australia aiming to raise awareness, reduce the risk of a reaction for those living with food allergy and help manage potentially life-threatening emergencies when they happen.

As part of Food Allergy Week, the Shire offered free half day allergen training to local food businesses and community groups. These sessions, presented by Gourmet Guardian, were attended by over 60 people.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill welcomed attendees to the training.

“It was great to see so many food retailers at this training supporting the important role played by local food businesses in providing correct allergen information to customers.

“The Shire encourages all food businesses to implement an allergen management plan to assist when preparing a specific menu item for someone who discloses a food allergy.

“Our Environmental Health Officers regularly assist food retailers to manage their allergen awareness, and through the Best Bites program the Shire recognises those businesses who are using best practice in allergen management,” concluded Cr Gill.
