Residents across Darwin are being asked to prepare for the cyclone season by cleaning up in and around their homes.
City of Darwin’s pre-cyclone clean up commences on 26 August, with suburbs allocated to two pickup Zones.
Unwanted items including furniture, whitegoods, scrap metal and e-waste are all accepted as part of the clean-up. Items can be placed on the nature strip for collection.
Green waste is NOT part of the clean- up and can be taken to the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility (SBWMF).
“In the lead up to the cyclone season City of Darwin is encouraging residents to take advantage of this great service,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.
“Removing unwanted items will ensure they do not become airborne during a cyclone and potentially cause damage.”
Many items put on the nature strip for collection can be reused or recycled and residents are being asked to put their items into specific groups for electrical, whitegoods, timber, scrap metal, cardboard, etc.
“Our teams will move through each of the Zones and collect by grouped items. This will be done once so please ensure all your items are placed on the verge on time for collection,” concluded Lord Mayor Vatskalis.
Zone 1 – Put items out for collection on Sunday 25, August. Suburbs in this Zone include Alawa, Anula, Brinkin, Casuarina, Jingili, Karama, Leanyer, Lyons, Malak, Marrara, Moil, Muirhead, Nakara, Tiwi, Wagaman, Wanguri and Wulagi.
Zone 2 – Put items out for collection on Sunday 15 September. Suburbs in Zone 2 include – Bayview, Coconut Grove, Darwin City, Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, Ludmilla, Millner, Nightcliff, Parap, Rapid Creek, Stuart Park, The Gardens, The Narrows and Woolner.
