Italy Wins Inaugural Liverpool Council Harmony Cup

Italy claimed the inaugural Liverpool Council Harmony Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout against Uruguay, capping a day that brought together approximately 2,500 community members to celebrate football, cultural diversity and international harmony.

Italy defeated Uruguay 3-2 on penalties after a goalless grand final at Hammondville on Saturday, with teams representing seven communities taking part in the tournament organised by Liverpool City Council in partnership with Football NSW.

It was a dramatic turnaround for Italy, who went down 2-0 to Uruguay when they first met in the competition.

Bosnia finished third, followed by Macedonia, Serbia, Syria and Sudan, in a competition that demonstrated how the world game can unite people across cultural and national backgrounds.

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun said the turnout and spirit of the day showed what could be achieved when communities came together around a shared passion.

“Football is a universal language. It brings people together regardless of where they were born, what language they speak or what traditions they grew up with.

“The Harmony Cup sends a message to the world that harmony can be achieved, and that it is something we should treasure and celebrate. We saw that on the field, in the stands and among the families who came along to support their teams.

“Liverpool is one of Australia’s most diverse communities, and we should be proud to celebrate that diversity while recognising everything we have in common.”

The event also featured a Multicultural Gala Day for young people aged five to 16, giving the next generation an opportunity to participate, connect and enjoy the game in a welcoming community environment.

Liverpool City Council CEO Jason Breton said the event demonstrated the value of community partnerships in creating opportunities for residents to connect.

“The Harmony Cup brought people together through sport and created a wonderful opportunity for families and communities to share in a positive, inclusive day,” Mr Breton said.

“Council is proud to work with Football NSW and our community partners to deliver events that encourage participation, strengthen connections and celebrate the diversity that makes Liverpool such a vibrant place to live.”

Council thanks its event sponsors, Roman’s Deli, the Belgravia Foundation, Turner Freeman Lawyers and Dr Fit, for helping make the inaugural tournament possible.

The Harmony Cup builds on Liverpool’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and strengthening the connections that bring the community together.
