Jen Butler’s memory loss

Mark Shelton,Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management

While Labor’s Jen Butler may have forgotten Labor’s inaction on implementing the Tasmanian Government Radio Network, Tasmanians have not.

In 2006, under a Labor Government, a project team was formed to implement a Whole of Government Radio Network and only resulted in 8 years of inaction.

A Report of the Auditor-General No. 10 of 2013-14 on Government radio communications identified that Labor’s Whole of Government project to resolve some of the difficulties achieved little.

The Report said “In our view, eight years on there has been little real progress in implementing a Whole of Government network”.

Labor’s legacy was a failure to deliver, and while she may try, Jen Butler cannot re-write history.

The only thing Labor actually did was sack hundreds of police officers, nurses and forestry workers.

It has taken the Tasmanian Liberal Government to get on with delivering this network, with contract negotiations having now commenced between the Tasmanian Government and Telstra to deliver the service.

TasGRN will modernise our emergency services and government agency communications once complete, and allow our key organisations to better serve the Tasmanian community.

This is something the Labor Government failed to do – only a Liberal Government can be trusted to deliver the TasGRN.
