Music students in tune with top professionals

Four professional music producers will share their expertise in song writing and production with music students from Callaghan College, Jesmond and Kariong Mountains High School tomorrow and on Wednesday.

The Jesmond Campus’ Head Teacher, Creative and Performing Arts, Jamie Mitchell, says the workshops for 32 Year 11 and 12 Music and Music Industry students under producers from the Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) is a unique opportunity.

“Learning how to grow the seed of a lyric or a melody into a whole song and then work out how best to perform it, and then produce that performance, is a complex creative and technical process you can only really learn on the job,” said Jamie.

“That’s why we’re delighted to have four of the best in the industry guiding our students to show them what’s possible, particularly with the amazing production technology that’s now accessible, and available to them in the Campus’ new CAPA facility.

“We’re hoping the workshops will inspire the students to be creative in their own time, especially given the impressive technology and software that can now be bought for home use at very reasonable cost.”

Eight groups of four students, each with at least one vocalist and one instrumentalist, will work with the producers to write and produce their own song, with opportunity to critique each others’ work at the end of the two days.

The workshops will be from 8.30am to 2.30pm on Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 May.
