Joint statement – Disaster assistance following Tropical Cyclone Veronica

  • TC Veronica declared natural disaster
  • Funding assistance for local governments of East Pilbara, Port Hedland and Karratha
  • Disaster assistance has been made available in the local government areas of East Pilbara, Karratha and Port Hedland following severe weather and flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Veronica.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management and North Queensland Recovery Senator the Hon. Linda Reynolds CSC and Western Australian Minister for Emergency Services Francis Logan said assistance was being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

“Tropical Cyclone Veronica crossed the coast as a Category 3 system, resulting in destructive winds, heavy rainfall and flooding,” Minister Reynolds said.

“Financial assistance is now available for the local government areas of East Pilbara, Karratha and Port Hedland to aid their recovery.

“Personal hardship assistance is also available to impacted residents in these areas to help with the recovery.”

Minister Logan said Tropical Cyclone Veronica caused widespread damage to the region, spreading debris and isolating communities.

“Through the DRFA, these local governments can now access funding to assist with the cost of clean-up and repairs,” Mr Logan said.

“The Commonwealth and Western Australian governments continue to monitor Tropical Cyclone Veronica’s impacts and are ready to extend disaster assistance to communities that need it.”
