Joint statement – WA to host world’s top digital content creators at GoPro Summit

The beauty of Western Australia is set to capture the minds and imaginations of some of the world’s best digital content creators when Broome and the surrounding Kimberley region plays host to the second annual GoPro Creator Summit in August.

Federal Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Simon Birmingham, together with Western Australia’s Minister for Tourism, Paul Papalia, today announced that a select group of 40 GoPro experts will travel to Australia’s north-west for a four-day program of training, tourism experiences and events.

“The GoPro Creator Summit is a great opportunity to showcase the variety of experiences on offer in WA, providing a spectacular backdrop for the world’s top digital content creators to share with their massive social media following,” Minister Birmingham said.

“We know tourism is a major contributor to the WA economy with domestic and international visitors injecting billions into regional areas and we expect projects like this to boost those numbers even more.

“This region is a natural wonderland for the creative mind with vastly different landscapes ranging from the spectacular Horizontal Falls in Broome, to the ancient dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point.

“Australians know that some of our country’s most unique and breathtaking destinations and experiences are found beyond the gateways, and this event will give us a unique opportunity to show the rest of the world just how diverse and beautiful our regions are.

“I am confident that through the hundreds of pieces of content that they will capture during their time here, these talented artists will provide ample inspiration for their millions of social media followers to book a trip to Australia to experience it for themselves.”

Mr Papalia said it was a fantastic opportunity for the Kimberley and Western Australia to have some of the world’s best content creators capture the beauty and majesty of the region to share with people from around the globe.

“The Kimberley region is one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth, covering billions of years in history and this opportunity will give us the chance to raise awareness of the State with people in our key overseas markets,” he said.

“This activity also supports the State Government’s investment of an additional $12 million into international marketing over the next 14 months to promote Western Australia as a holiday destination.”

Approximately 40 creators from across the world who have a combined international social reach of over 28 million will take part in the Summit including Tourism Australia advocates Teigan Nash and Brinkley Davies, who will be among nine Australians to attend.

More than 250 pieces of content are expected to be generated during the Summit and shared by the creators, GoPro, Tourism Australia and Tourism Western Australia across their platforms.

During the Summit, creators will have the opportunity to see firsthand some of the best experiences on offer in Broome and the surrounding Kimberley region, including flying over the spectacular Horizontal Falls; kayaking amongst wild turtles and humpback whales at Gantheaume Point; touring Kooljaman at Cape Leveque, run by the Indigenous Bardi Jawi Communities; relaxing at Cable Beach; and viewing Broome’s 120-million-year-old dinosaur footprints on Australia’s only public hovercraft tour.

The event will be delivered by GoPro in partnership with Tourism Australia and Tourism Western Australia from August 4-8, 2019.

This is the second time that Australia has partnered with GoPro on a major event. In 2016, Tourism Australia hosted the GoPro Athlete Summit on the Gold Coast, Queensland, which generated nearly 1,000 pieces of content with a reach of more than 200 million.

Last year the GoPro Creator Summit was held in Alberta, Canada where the famous Canadian Rockies provided the perfect scenery for content developers to go wild.

Tourism is worth $136 billion to the Australian economy and that’s why the Federal Coalition Government continues to deliver record funding to Tourism Australia to deliver award-winning international marketing campaigns such as Dundee.
