The McGowan Government’s desire to improve housing options and deliver thoughtful housing design and infill density was highlighted today when Housing Minister Peter Tinley visited a new 16-apartment development in Spearwood.
The Department of Communities has partnered with Dale Alcock Projects on the $3.6 million project in Kent Street, which offers a range of affordable housing options just five kilometres from the centre of Fremantle.
The contemporary multi-dwelling development replaces a former public housing complex demolished in 2016 and is close to existing amenities, including schools, transport, parks and the Phoenix Shopping Centre.
The two-storey development – catering for a broad market – has a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments for shared equity and full market sale, and one social housing unit.
The development aligns with the State Government’s Affordable Housing Action Plan to boost housing options for people on low-to-moderate incomes to more than 35,000 by 2020, while generating $2.3 billion in economic activity and almost 6,000 jobs.
As noted by Housing Minister Peter Tinley:
“The Housing Industry Forecast Group’s latest report identifies multi-residential dwelling construction as an important plank in the recovery of WA’s housing market, and notes the challenge posed by a lack of housing stock diversity.
“This development will bring much-needed diversity and choice to Spearwood. Increasing the supply of these sorts of dwellings is a key component of the McGowan Government’s plan to limit urban sprawl.
“The State Government will continue to work with the private sector to increase the supply of new housing, with a firm focus on the affordable end of the market.”
