Joondalup’s one stop shop for learner drivers opens

  • PDA bookings released for Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre
  • WA’s dedicated learner driver centre open from today
  • Additional PDAs also available at four metro centres over summer
  • New centre will add at least 10,000 new PDAs each year

The Cook Government has opened the Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre today to cater solely as a one stop shop for customers on the learner driver journey.

The opening of the dedicated centre will create thousands of new practical driving assessment (PDA) slots each year.

The Department of Transport (DoT) has begun releasing bookings for practical driver assessments at Joondalup and will release hundreds more over the coming weeks as part of its daily PDA release.

DoT has spent the past six months creating the dedicated learner driver centre at its Boas Avenue site in Joondalup.

The driver assessment centre has been designed to meet the demand for practical driving assessments in the metro area, which in recent years has been unprecedented.

At Joondalup, DoT customers will have access to services to assist them on the learner driver journey and more, including:

  • Practical driving assessments or PDAs;
  • Computerised theory and hazard perception tests;
  • Learner’s permit and WA photo card applications; and
  • Interstate and overseas driver’s licence transfers.

Practical driving assessment candidates are now able to book a C-class PDA at the new Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre.

The Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre will be open six days a week, Monday to Saturday 7.15am to 5.30pm with an initial 10 driver assessors ready to conduct 38 C-class PDAs daily.

Further recruitment for driver assessors will continue and PDA extended to include heavy vehicle and motorcycle classes in the new year.

An additional ten customer service staff have also come on board to assist customers when applying for their learner’s permit or WA Photocard, sitting their theory and hazard perception tests, and to issue provisional licences when a PDA is successful.

DoT will also offer additional weekend PDAs at our Driver and Vehicle Services centres in Midland, Mirrabooka, Rockingham and Kelmscott in December and January to further ease pressure on the booking system.

PDA bookings can be made online via the candidates DoTDirectaccount.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“We acknowledge there has been unprecedented demand for PDA bookings and the opening of the dedicated Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre will help to alleviate some of that by adding thousands of new practical driving assessments each year.

“Assessments can be booked from today and we expect availability to continue growing as we recruit more assessors into the system.

“The decision to open a dedicated driver assessment centre is one of a number measures our Government has put in place to enable fair access to PDA bookings, including switching off the function that allowed assessors to swap bookings and implementing improved systems to crack down on the use of bots.”

As stated by Minister Assisting the Transport Minister David Michael:

“At Joondalup, DoT’s northern suburbs customers will have access to services to assist them on the learner driver journey, including learner’s permit applications, theory and hazard perception tests and of course, practical driving assessments.

“DoT has also made weekend PDAs available at Midland, Mirrabooka, Rockingham and Kelmscott DVS centres in December and January to cater for increase in booking demands over the busy summer period.”

As stated by Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:

“The opening of a new dedicated driver assessment centre in Joondalup is something I campaigned strongly on, and I am thrilled that today we are announcing its opening.

“The new centre highlights the commitment of the Cook Government to help ease the pressure on PDA bookings and represents a win for the Joondalup community.”
