The first road upgrade under a $70 million investment in Kakadu National Park is ready in time for the school holidays.
Kubara Road in the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park is now open. The upgraded road gives visitors safer and more reliable access to Kubara Pools and the Nanguluwurr art site walks.
The upgrade included raising and realigning a section of Kubara Road into a six-metre-wide gravel road and installing a new culvert and concrete floodway. These upgrades will help keep the road open during wet weather.
The Australian Government has invested $70 million to improve road access to some of Kakadu National Park’s most visited attractions.
Work continues on other key tourism routes across the park, including Maguk Road and Jim Jim Falls Road. Upgrades to Gimbat and Gunlom Roads are expected to begin shortly.
The Northern Territory Government Department of Logistics and Infrastructure is delivering the upgrades in consultation with Parks Australia and the Northern Land Council. Traditional Owners will play a role in works as cultural monitors, to ensure cultural heritage is respectfully protected and preserved for future generations.
