Kakadu’s Twin Falls escarpment reopens to visitors

The Hon Sussan Ley MP
Minister for the Environment

As Darwin’s COVID lock down ends, Kakadu’s tourism infrastructure has received a welcome boost with access now open to the iconic Twin Falls escarpment after the completion of Morrison Government upgrades under its $267 million infrastructure program.

This is the first time in two years that access to the Falls is open via the Jim Jim Creek crossing, which had been impassable due to localised flooding. The crossing has now been raised to enable safer and more reliable dry-season access.

“The Twin Falls area is truly magnificent and along with the region’s Traditional Owners, we are pleased to be reopening this special part of Kakadu to those who can safely visit now, and the many more who will experience it in the future,” Minister Ley said.

“At a time when travel is severely limited and tourism across the nation is under incredible pressure, this is a positive step in ensuring that people and businesses can look to the future.

“There are further improvements ahead, the base of the gorge remains closed this year while Parks Australia consults with Traditional Owners and technical experts to upgrade viewing platforms and provide greater access.”

Renewal of infrastructure in the dual World Heritage-listed area is being delivered by Parks Australia under the Kakadu Tourism Master Plan in close consultation with Traditional Owners and with the support of the Northern Territory Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority and the Northern Land Council.

Before travelling to Kakadu, all visitors are strongly requested to check and abide by their state/territory COVID-19 restrictions, as well as the NT Government Coronavirus (COVID-19) website. Nobody in a state or area of lockdown should not come to Kakadu National Park.

Those able visit Kakadu National Park are strongly encouraged to read the safety advice on the Parks Australia website. They are reminded to be Crocwise, follow directions from rangers and obey signage. The Twin Falls Gorge is currently closed and swimming in the gorge is not permitted at this time.
