Kayaker rescued off Sandringham

Police and emergency services rescued a kayaker off Sandringham this morning.

It’s understood a 61-year-old Belgrave Heights man was kayaking near the shipping channel when a rogue wave knocked him from his kayak about 12.40pm.

The man became separated from his kayak and activated his personal locator beacon (PLB).

As a result air and sea assets were deployed and the man was located a short time later.

The man was taken to the Sandringham Yacht Club and assessed by Ambulance Victoria.

Sergeant Wade O’Toole of Victoria Police Water Police said this highlights the fact that the right safety gear, used correctly can save lives.

“A lot of these incidents can be avoided if people are sensible on the water, ensure they carry mandatory operational equipment, and check the weather conditions.”
