This World Environment Day and with the arrival of winter, Canberrans are being reminded to use their wood heaters efficiently or switch to a more sustainable alternative.
We have great air quality in Canberra, however smoke from domestic wood heaters remains the largest source of air pollution. Canberrans can look after our local environment and reduce wood smoke pollution by burning right tonight.
The theme for World Environment Day 2019 is ‘beat air pollution’. Effectively using wood heaters minimises pollution from wood smoke, helping protect residents from harmful health impacts.
We’re also encouraging ACT residents to replace their wood heaters with more environmentally-friendly alternatives such as electric systems. Rebates of $250 are on offer to remove domestic wood heaters.
Our ‘Burn Right Tonight’ campaign highlights a number of ways to use wood heaters effectively:
- use dry, well-seasoned, untreated wood
- open the air control fully when starting a fire
- use smaller logs to maintain a vigorous fire
- avoid a smouldering overnight.
