Keeping food scraps out of landfill

Yarra Ranges Shire Council

The cycle of composting, food waste in a bin is composted and used to grow new fruit and vegetables which is then eaten and scraps are returned to the bin for composting.

On 2 October, the Yarra Ranges community started placing garden clippings and food scraps, including meat, bones, dairy and citrus, into their lime green lidded FOGO bins.

In the first month, the amount of rubbish going to landfill reduced by about 41%, compared to the volume we sent to landfill in October 2022.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Jim Child, thanked the community for their efforts.

“We know change is never easy, and this is one of the biggest changes to bins in three decades,” he said.

“Nonetheless, it’s been extremely heartening to see the community embrace their FOGO collections and help us prevent food waste going into landfill.

“The food and garden organics you put in your FOGO bin will get composted and re-used to enrich soil in parks, gardens and farmland, which is far better for the environment and for the next generations.

“We all need to do our bit to avoid sending anything to landfill – this means choosing items with recyclable packaging, utilising the FOGO bin and avoiding single use plastics that can’t be recycled.”
