Keeping hinterland communities connected and safe on roads

Sunshine Coast Council

A $2.3 million boost to a Palmwoods connection road has been sealed and delivered, ready for motorists to enjoy.

The project was completed last month and was jointly funded by the Australian Government and Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 5 councillor Winston Johnston said council was dedicated to improving the safety of Citrus Rd for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

“This road upgrade is vital in keeping our small communities, residents and local businesses connected and safe,” Cr Johnston said.

“The unsealed ‘missing link’ spanning 950 metres between Wilkins Lane and Eudlo School Rd has been upgraded to improve safety in line with road design and safety standards.

“The works included improving the alignment of the road as well as widening to provide one lane each way with a road shoulder on each side.

“The works have also enhanced road conditions and, importantly, line of sight for road users which was a critical component of this major upgrade.

“An added benefit for residents is that dust will no longer be a problem now that the road is sealed.

“This is an important travelling route connecting the Palmwoods and Eudlo communities and is a high priority for council to make sure everyone continues to benefit and enjoy our unique urban and rural lifestyles.

“I would like to thank the community for your understanding and patience while these works were delivered from August 2021. It was well worth the wait!”

The works are part of council’s Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan contributing $100,000 from council. The project is funded by the Australian Government’s $2.2 million provided through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.

This program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Federal Member for Fisher and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Andrew Wallace MP said this project would make a huge difference to local residents who use the road each day.

“Through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, the Federal Government is partnering with local governments to ease congestion and improve safety – to ensure that locals can get home sooner and safer,” Mr Wallace said.

“This is about supporting people to get back on their feet after a challenging two years, and helping local families and local businesses get ahead.”
