Kempsey’s roadmap to more inclusive and accessible community

Kempsey Shire Council

International Day of People with disability

The lives and needs of Kempsey people who living with, or supporting those living with, disability will be a key focus in future planning after a key plan was embraced by Kempsey Shire Council.

At the May Council Meeting, Councillors voted unanimously to adopt the new Disability Inclusion Action Plan which outlines actions the organisation will take to improve inclusivity and accessibility.

Kempsey Shire Council Mayor, Leo Hauville, said the Disability Inclusion Action Plan will guide Council and the shire on its path to provide equitable services and events for people with disability.

“In the 2016 census, almost 10 per cent of residents identified as having a disability and this is a significant portion of our community.”

“It is therefore vital we deliver infrastructure, services and events to ensure people with disability live rich and meaningful lives. We should plan to have everyone included in the life of our shire community.”

Kempsey Shire Council General Manager, Craig Milburn, said everyone has the right to feel included in their local communities.

“The Disability Inclusion Action Plan outlines actions that we will carry out under four key focus areas and Council is passionately dedicated to providing equitable opportunities for all residents in the shire,” said Mr Milburn.

“Services that people without a disability may take for granted can be challenging to access for people with disability. These challenges are given everyday meaning for readers through local people with disability who have bravely shared their stories.”

The plan sets out four key aims:

  • Increasing positive attitudes & behaviours towards people with disability
  • Making Kempsey Shire more accessible, inclusive & liveable
  • Increasing meaningful education & employment for those with disability
  • Improving access to Council’s services through better systems & processes
