Kempsey West Public School host fantastic NAIDOC cultural festival

Kempsey Shire Council

a group of students learning about local aboriginal culture

A week full of fantastic celebrations took place at Kempsey West Public School between 20 – 25 June to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

Students, staff, parents and local Elders participated in several activities and learnings to celebrate the Kempsey Shire’s local Aboriginal culture. These occurred outside of the traditional NAIDOC Week festivities as these fall during school holidays.

Featured during week was a cultural food festival on Thursday 23 June which saw local agencies, Elders and parents join in the celebrations.

Cultural activities such as making damper, traditional weaving, story telling and creative arts were enjoyed by all. The students and staff were also presented with their NAIDOC shirts.

The Thursday event was made possible thanks to Council’s NAIDOC Week Community Grants.

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and accomplishments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and is on around Australia right now.
