Kids benefit from STEM Punks visit thanks to grant

Western Downs kids have been given a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at a series of workshops delivered by STEM Punks last week

Western Downs Libraries was one of 54 libraries across Australia to receive a grant from National Backyard Cricket, which raises funds for education projects in regional libraries.

The sessions were delivered to students from Tara, Moonie, The Gums and Westmar as part of funding received from National Backyard Cricket, a fundraising program established by national charity The LBW Trust.

Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said the STEM Punk sessions were a wonderful opportunity for the region’s youth.

“It was fantastic to see our young people enjoy a fun, hands-on learning experience at the STEM Punks workshops,” Cr Maguire said.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are sought-after skills and their relevance is only growing, so sparking an early interest in these disciplines is important, plus it’s a lot of fun for kids of all ages and interests.

“Western Downs Libraries offer much more than a place to borrow books, they offer a range of innovative, modern and exciting opportunities to learn something new and explore emerging technologies.”

Chair of the LBW Trust David Vaux said they recognised the important role libraries played in rural and regional areas and were proud to provide funding for these types of initiatives.

“We are so thrilled that we can support local libraries as we know they have a powerful impact on learning and life outcomes,” Mr Vaux said.

“Public libraries offer a range of services to their communities and we are really pleased we can provide funding to support this work.”
