Kindness hits mark for bullying prevention in Australian schools

More than 6500 schools across Australia are today marking the 12th National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA), and using Kindness Culture to say bullying is never OK.

Acting Minister for Education and Youth Stuart Robert said the NDA 2022 theme Kindness Culture encourages schools, students and their wider school community to be inclusive, respectful and create a sense of belonging to help prevent bullying.

‘The National Day of Action offers an opportunity to teach what kindness looks and sounds like, and to demonstrate kind behaviour, both of which play important roles in bullying prevention,’ Minister Robert said.

‘Every student should feel safe and welcome at school. The National Day of Action is an important opportunity for all school communities to demonstrate their commitment to addressing bullying and violence.

‘Together we can make a change. From small acts of kindness to being a proactive bystander, everyone has a role to play in bullying prevention.

‘With the increase in young people online over the past two years, the Be Kind Online animations and accompanying resources provide practical advice to support young people experiencing cyberbullying.

‘The message of “Block the person, report the post and support your friends” empowers students with the right tools and information to help prevent bullying and encourages kindness when they see cyberbullying.

‘This day of action ignites bullying prevention conversations for schools today, but real change continues every day.’

The Bullying. No Way! website has a wide range of resources for schools, teachers, parents, students and the school community to continue the conversation after the NDA.

The Bullying. No Way! website is the trusted government authority, offering resources to support Australian schools and communities in preventing and responding to bullying.

Schools have access to a range of evidence-informed resources and information all year round. Schools can find the Be Kind Online resources for Years 3 to 12 at bullyingnoway.gov.au.
