Jeremy Rockliff, Premier
One of Australia’s most celebrated public golf courses is entering a new era, with The Honourable Jeremy Rockliff MP, Premier of Tasmania set to officially launch the rebranding of Ocean Dunes as part of a multi-million-dollar upgrade.
Following extensive market research, King Links, King Island has been chosen as the new name, with the King Crab its visual identity – both symbolic of the destination, provenance, course type, and natural beauty of King Island, and precede the opening of a new 48-room lodge hotel on February 1, 2027.
“This is an exciting project for King Island and will elevate Tasmania’s position as a leader on the international stage of golf,” Premier Rockliff said.
“The re-birth of this spectacular course as King Links, King Island represents the next chapter in our state’s world-class tourism story, strengthened by our Government’s $10 million investment as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.
“Most importantly, this isn’t just an investment in a premier global golf destination, it’s an investment in our people with predominantly Tasmanians employed in the project, including seven local apprentices who are gaining invaluable world-class trade experience,” the Premier said.
“We are thrilled to welcome Premier Jeremy Rockliff to the island to share in this significant milestone,” said Andrew Muir, Resort Chair.
“The new brand captures what makes this place so special and is a significant milestone in the $38 million upgrade of this bucket-list destination, all of which wouldn’t be made possible without the wonderful support and shared vision of the Tasmanian Government.”
Only five minutes from the King Island Airport, and less than an hour flight from both mainland Tasmania and Melbourne, the world-class resort, which recently made the world’s Top 50 Bucketlist Golf Courses, is preparing for further significant upgrades with a new clubhouse and on-course restaurant set to open in early 2028.
“The relatively recent establishment and success of purist links golf on King Island has been truly visionary and remarkable, and Ocean Dunes, now King Links, as well as Cape Wickham have been at the vanguard of this exciting development,” added Councillor Marcus Blackie, Mayor of King Island.
“The course rebranding and upcoming opening of the new King Links hotel complex development in February, will take this whole operation to the next level.”
Tourism Tasmania has also thrown its weight behind the rebrand, highlighting the project’s power to attract high-yielding global and Australian travellers to the region.
“King Island has established itself as one of Australia’s truly distinctive places to play golf, and this next chapter for King Links, King Island will give even more visitors a reason to make the journey and experience for themselves everything the island has to offer,” said Sarah Kingston Clark, Tourism Tasmania CEO.
