Kingston Quarter: Delivering more homes and the first stage of the Kingston Arts Precinct

The ACT Government is releasing land to enable the staged delivery of the Kingston Arts Precinct – complementing the existing Kingston Foreshore and delivering more homes for Canberrans.

This integrated development will pave the way for the future Kingston Arts Precinct by securing up to 250 new homes and more than 21,000m2 of residential, hotel, hospitality retail and commercial opportunities.

The site is located at Section 49 Kingston, adjacent to the Powerhouse, the Former Transport Depot, and the Fitters Workshop. The land release was enabled through a Subdivision Design Application approval, which has created the mixed-use block neighbouring the future Kingston Arts Precinct.

It will also include the provision of a public car park and associated amenities such as end-of-trip facilities.

The Kingston Quarter is for sale by Design Based Tender. Interested developers will need to respond directly to the Kingston Arts Precinct Place Brief, which was informed by significant community engagement over the course of 2022.

The successful tenderer will be required to undertake further community engagement to support the development of the site.

Quote attributable to ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr:

“The Kingston Quarter is the first stage of the Kingston Arts Precinct and an important next step in the continued transformation of the Kingston Foreshore.

“This development will deliver up to 250 new homes alongside new hotel, hospitality, retail and commercial opportunities. It will create a place where Canberrans and visitors can live, stay, work and enjoy one of our city’s most recognisable destinations.

“Importantly, our focus is on delivering the housing and commercial outcomes first. This approach will build the activity and investment needed to support the long-term success of the Kingston Arts Precinct.

“Another key principle of this development is that new parking will be delivered early. We know parking is important for local businesses, residents, workers and visitors. The staged delivery model means replacement parking comes first, ensuring access to the Precinct is maintained as development progresses.

“The initial land release will support the delivery of public parking, end-of-trip facilities and artist housing. Once that parking capacity is in place, further stages of the Precinct can move forward with confidence.

“This is about getting the sequencing right. We are delivering the infrastructure first, protecting access during construction, and creating the foundations for an arts and cultural destination that will serve Canberra for decades to come.”
