Know your rights: stop elder abuse before it happens

Know your rights

The rights of older people will be the focus of a free forum in November, which will provide information for older people, their families and carers that could help to prevent elder abuse.

Speakers at the Know Your Rights forum will include representatives from:

  • Seniors Rights Victoria
  • Elder Rights Advocacy
  • The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission
  • Victoria Police.

Elder abuse is any act which causes harm to an older person carried out by someone they know and trust, such as family or friends. The most common form of abuse is financial—using someone’s money improperly—but this can be combined with other forms of abuse such as psychological abuse. There are some simple steps older people can take to protect themselves, and these will be discussed at the forum.

The forum will be held from 12pm to 3pm on Wednesday 13 November at the Norma Richardson Hall, 15 Buckland Street Woodend. A light lunch will be offered from noon, and the forum will be followed by afternoon tea and an opportunity to meet with speakers.
