Labor and Liberals refuse to commit to Belco Busway

Australian Greens

ACT Labor and the Canberra Liberals have today combined to vote down ACT Greens’ calls to commit to better buses and public transport priority for Belconnen.

“Today I called on the ACT Government to commit to delivering a dedicated busway in Belconnen and improved bus services,” said Jo Clay, ACT Greens Spokesperson for Transport and Member for Ginninderra.

“While both ACT Labor and the Canberra Liberals acknowledged the need for the project, neither were willing to commit to delivering it.

“ACT Labor and the Canberra Liberals are all talk and no action.

“This project has been in the pipeline since 2011, the time to commit is now.

“Belconnen deserves better, faster bus services and a dedicated lane. More than 30% of boardings each weekday are on routes that use this corridor.

“Currently, many Belco buses aren’t reaching their full potential, because they’re stuck in traffic on roads like College Street, Haydon Drive and Belconnen Way.

“I’m incredibly disappointed with my ACT Labor colleagues and all MLAs in Ginninderra who voted against the Belconnen Busway.

“While the Canberra Liberals would have supported the calls for a Belco Busway, they weren’t prepared to future-proof it for light rail to Belconnen. We can’t in good conscience betray the people of Belconnen by giving them half of a good public transport system.

“The ACT Greens want firm commitments to improving buses for Belconnen and we will not shy away from setting timelines to deliver these,” said Ms Clay
