Labor Cracks Down On Used Car Rip-Offs

VIC Premier

Labor is cracking down on dodgy used car dealers.

More and more Victorians are buying used cars online – and unlicensed traders are cashing in.

New research found nearly a third of sampled used cars were advertised online with odometers wound back by at least 25,000 kilometres.

Some unlicensed traders are also buying cars in bulk at auction, then selling them at a markup on social media.

That’s not fair and Labor is putting a stop to it.

New laws will give Consumer Affairs Victoria more powers to crack down on dodgy dealers.

These laws will make it easier to investigate, fine and prosecute odometer tampering – with traders now required to check the odometer before sale.

The reforms also create a single point of contact for Victorians who’ve been ripped off, tighten the rules on auction houses and strengthen the safety net for buyers left out of pocket.

Consumer Affairs Victoria will run a statewide crackdown, with a public education campaign and a targeted compliance blitz on unlicensed traders.

These changes will make sure Victorian families aren’t taken for a ride by dodgy traders.

It builds on Labor’s work to make life easier for drivers – with 20 per cent off rego, the Fair Fuel Plan and Servo Saver app.

If you’re a motorist Labor’s got your back.

Jess Wilson’s $40 billion cuts plan starts by axing more than 7,000 public servants.

That means gutting Consumer Affairs Victoria who are protecting motorists and making the market fairer.

Only Labor has new solutions to make life easier, safer and more affordable.

As stated by Minister for Consumer Affairs Paul Edbrooke

“When you buy a used car, you should get what you pay for – not get taken for a ride.”

“More Victorians are shopping for cars online, and we’re making sure the dodgy operators have nowhere to hide.”

“Labor is on the side of motorists – Jess Wilson’s Liberals want to gut the very team protecting them.”
