Labor Sinks Rink In Huge Blow For Tuggeranong

Australian Greens

After 10 years of waiting, ice sports players and the Tuggeranong community have been hung out to dry after the ACT Labor Government today announced they were scrapping the planned Tuggeranong Ice Sports Centre.

As stated by Laura Nuttall MLA, ACT Greens Member for Brindabella and Spokesperson for Sports and Recreation.

Labor has spent three elections promising Tuggeranong an ice sports centre. Now, after years of assurances, the project is back to square one.

This promised facility was one of the issues I heard about the most from the local community.

This is a huge blow to Tuggeranong and to Canberra’s ice sports community, who have been waiting more than a decade for the facility they were promised..

Ice sports players were promised an Olympic standard facility, only to be told after three consecutive elections that the government is now reconsidering the project.

That’s simply not good enough.

For years, we have asked the government for updates on this proposal and been repeatedly reassured that the project is still on its way; so what has changed now?

I am seeking a briefing from the Sports Minister to get answers for the community on this including the specific cost-benefit analysis the government undertook. The community deserves to know why the government has changed their tune.

We also need to know what specifically Canberrans can expect in ice sports facilities going into the future, and what Tuggeranong can expect from this funding now being redirected away from this project.

You can’t spend a decade making promises to a community then simply walk away when it’s time to deliver.

We can’t afford another 10 years of Labor governments being elected on the back of more promises they won’t deliver. We need details, and we need guarantees that projects are going to happen.

After three elections of this promise, Tuggeranong elected two Labor members to represent us, but even with Tuggeranong represented on the government backbench and in cabinet, Labor is still failing to deliver.

The community deserves more than another promise. They deserve a plan, a timeline, and a guarantee this time that Labor will actually deliver.
