Labor stands against Tasmanian AFL team

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Recreation

The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street has called out the Labor Opposition for opposing both a Tasmanian AFL team and millions of investment in sporting infrastructure.

“Labor’s opposition has been exposed for what it is – rank politics that stands in the way of our own AFL side,” Minister Street said.

“It’s simply unbelievable that any political party, whether in Government or not, would oppose millions of dollars in funding for new infrastructure or sporting facilities in their State, but here we are.

“Even worse, as the AFL CEO said yesterday, a stadium is the last key piece of the puzzle to deliver Tasmania our own team once and for all, after decades of trying and countless attempts that went nowhere.

“Labor are pretending a stadium isn’t required, but it is crystal clear that the Presidents will not support a Tasmanian AFL side unless we have the world-class infrastructure and facilities in place to support it.

“If Labor opposes the stadium, they oppose the team. It’s that simple.

“And by opposing the team, Labor are also turning their back on millions in investment from the AFL that will reinvigorate the game from the grassroots up, along with developing the next generation of home-grown talent.”
