Lake Alexander closed to all water activities

Lake Alexander at East Point Reserve has been temporarily closed today after high bacteria levels were detected during routine water quality monitoring.

City of Darwin Chief Executive Officer Scott Waters said it was not unusual for large rain events to result in high bacteria levels.

“Water testing conducted this week show bacteria concentrations are above recommended levels, which is often the case after the recent significant rain events,” Mr Waters said.

“The safest course of action is to keep the lake closed to all water activities until the levels have normalised.”

Water quality at Lake Alexander is regularly monitored for public safety. The most recent test results have yielded high Enterococci at all sample sites in the lake. The lake will continue to be tested daily.

“City of Darwin is committed to maintaining the highest environmental practices to protect the community and our environment,” Mr Waters added.

The public will be advised when the lake is reopened. Until then please heed all signs.
