Residents and businessowners in Lake Macquarie are being encouraged to donate to support humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine.

The call to action comes off the back of a Mayoral Minute unanimously supported at Council’s Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday 27 June.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser recently attended the 2022 Australian Local Government Association National General Assembly in Canberra, where delegates received a powerful presentation from the Ukraine Ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko.

“The presentation included video updates from various Mayors across Ukraine showing how their cities have been affected, including deaths that have occurred from the targeting of hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure in an effort to make the cities unliveable,” Cr Fraser said.

“Mr Myroshnychenko applauded the generous donations from the Australian Government and people but indicated that continuing donations are greatly appreciated as the cost to rebuild will be significant and ongoing.

“In light of the need for ongoing support, I’m asking our Lake Macquarie community to donate to charities that are currently providing valuable humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine.”

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade recommends that people consult the Australian Council for International Development Ukraine appeal website to ensure their donations make an impact.
