A man has been charged after the Police helicopter suffered a laser strike this morning.
At about 2.50am Eagle was flying above Mount Eden when a laser light was allegedly directed at the aircraft.
Auckland City Area Response Manager, Acting Senior Sergeant Christian Iogha, says the light lasted for several seconds at a time, with one incident last almost 30 seconds.
“Officers quickly spotted a man shining the light and moving around the house to use different windows as the aircraft was moving.
“On board technology quickly identified the property and Police were able to take a man into custody without incident.”
Acting Senior Sergeant Iogha says a 28-year-old man has since been charged with interfering with an aircraft under the Civil Aviation Act 2023.
“The Police helicopter crew is out there working hard for the protection and safety of our community, and this type of behaviour puts everyone at risk.”
The alleged offender will appear in Auckland District Court on 27 October.
