Launceston SkyBus Service Ready For Take-off

Tasmanian Government

The Launceston Airport SkyBus service is set to begin, creating a direct route for passengers between the airport and Launceston’s CBD.

The 12-month trial will operate seven days a week with trips running hourly between 4.30am and 11.15pm.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said the SkyBus service creates a convenient and affordable transport option for travellers, with $16 adult fares.

“Our Government has spent some time working on a reliable transport solution to and from Launceston Airport, as passenger numbers continue to grow,” Minister Vincent said.

“This exciting initiative delivers on our commitment to provide more transport options for residents travelling to and from the airport, as well as making it easier for visitors arriving at the airport.”

Minister for Parks and Heritage, Nick Duigan, said, the Launceston Airport has experienced significant growth in recent years.

“Last financial year, almost 1.5 million passengers travelled through the terminal, making it the busiest period on record,” Minister Duigan said.

“We have worked with SkyBus and the Launceston Airport to deliver a reliable service for residents and visitors which will complement extensive airport upgrades, including the $12 million departures hall revamp being delivered.

“The SkyBus will serve as an important link between the airport gate and Launceston’s best events. Our Government’s $1 million investment into the SkyBus service will also help support major events across the State’s North, which is a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future and our Northern Economic Plan.

“While operating during the recent Launceston Foo Fighters concert – the single busiest day in the airport’s history – the SkyBus proved a valuable passenger option, and I look forward to it becoming a regular driver for the northern events sector across the next 12 months.”

The Tasmanian Government and SkyBus owner Kinetic will work closely throughout the trial period to monitor patronage, customer feedback and overall service performance.

Kinetic General Manager Tasmania, Andrew Grzinic, said the trial would give locals and visitors a direct, affordable link between the terminal and the city.

“We thank the Tasmanian Government and Launceston Airport for backing this trial. The timetable is built around flight times, so people can get to and from the airport without needing to drive, park or arrange a lift,” Mr Grzinic said.

“The route includes six stops around the city, including hotels and the Transit Centre, so whether you’re a visitor arriving for the first time or a local heading off on holiday, there’s a stop close by.

“Starting in November means the service will be up and running in time for summer, when northern Tasmania sees the most visitors.”

Launceston Airport Chief Executive, Katie Cooper, said the airport was really pleased to welcome SkyBus to Launceston Airport.

“We look forward to seeing the service in action during the trial, providing passengers with another convenient option for travelling between the airport and the heart of Launceston,” Ms Cooper said.

SkyBus Launceston Airport services are set to commence on 2 November, with special introductory fares to celebrate the trial’s launch now available until November 30.
