Laws pass Parliament to deliver two new public holidays for WA

  • New laws give WA two new public holidays from 2028 Show Day and Easter Saturday while dates for three other public holidays will be moved
  • Changes will align WA’s public holidays with other states, improving productivity
  • Cook Labor Government ensuring WA remains the best place in the world to live, do business and raise a family

Legislation to give Western Australians two additional public holidays has passed Parliament.

The changes will see the dates of two existing public holidays, Labour Day and the King’s Birthday, moved to better align Western Australia with other states and territories and support economic activity and productivity.

WA Day will also move to November, giving Western Australians a break ahead of the Christmas season and ensuring celebrations can be enjoyed outside of winter.

Two new public holidays, Easter Saturday and Show Day, will provide certainty for Western Australians and ensure workers are paid appropriately when working on those public holidays.

The changes were developed following extensive community consultation, including more than 10,000 submissions from businesses, not-for-profit organisations, peak bodies, unions and members of the broader community.

With the legislation now passed, a two-year implementation period will allow businesses, organisations, governments and the broader WA community to prepare for the new public holiday calendar commencing in 2028.

This transition period will provide time to make the necessary administrative and operational arrangements ahead of the changes taking effect.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

“My government has modernised WA’s public holiday calendar which will be better suited to modern life in WA, following clear, broad support from the Western Australian community.

“We’re creating two new public holidays, Easter Saturday and Show Day, and aligning three other public holidays with other States to help boost productivity.

“With this legislation now passed, Western Australians can look forward to two additional public holidays and a modernised public holiday calendar from 2028.”
