- New round of bright young leaders selected to join the WA Student Council
- Council provides public school students with a voice to shape the future of public education in Western Australia
Education Minister Dr Tony Buti has today announced a new team of exceptional students have been appointed to join the WA Student Council.
The passionate students, who will replace departing members, join the council to represent the interests of their peers and help inform education policy.
After an extensive selection process, members were chosen from across WA’s eight education regions for their outstanding leadership, dedication, intellectual and cultural diversity, and passion for making a positive impact within their school communities.
Over the past year, the current student councillors have played a pivotal part in informing the Department of Education on a broad range of issues including vaping, mental health, wellbeing, consent, respect and equity.
They also shared their views on body image in a private session with Australian of the Year Taryn Brumfitt, participated in national ministerial forums and meetings, were speakers at conferences where they expertly answered audience questions, represented schools and students in their regions and actively participated in training and development initiatives.

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:
“The WA Student Council offers a vital platform for students to provide their perspective on a broad range of matters impacting public education. These inspiring young people have not only excelled academically, but fostered a sense of unity, inclusivity and school spirit, which is why they have been chosen for this privilege.
“I am very excited that our schools are in great hands and being powered by our most important people our students.
“These committed young advocates will become the new torchbearers in public education. Their diverse skills and perspectives will make a vital contribution, as it is important students influence education policy to make sure it caters for and responds to their needs.
“I am continuously impressed by the strong leadership, innovation and drive they demonstrate. I offer my warm congratulations and look forward to supporting them as they go on this exciting journey of service that will ultimately boost the overall success of our schools.”
As stated by 2024 WA Student Councillor and East Kimberley College student Clare Davey:
“I am really looking forward to meeting new people and working together to contribute to West Australian schools.
“I’m excited to help others and represent my remote area of the East Kimberley.
“One of the things I wish to advocate for is to improve mental health and student wellbeing in remote areas, helping students enjoy school.”
