Leadership and communication in community pharmacy

Effective communication and leadership skills are important in all facets of life, but are particularly important in healthcare.

Healthcare providers’ communication skills influence their patients’ ability to follow through with medical recommendations, self-manage chronic conditions, and practice preventative health behaviours.1

In this way, pharmacists act as leaders in their community, and within their pharmacy.

In addition, all pharmacists, whether in a management capacity or not, act as leaders for other pharmacy staff by being the person in the pharmacy that others look to.

Effective communication and leadership skills are part of lifelong learning, and no-one can ever perfect these skills.

Guild Learning and Development, with sponsorship from Upjohn Australia, has developed a new online course to support pharmacists in further developing their skills titled Leadership and communication in community pharmacy.

While pharmacists are well-versed in basic communication skills, this course aims to provoke deeper consideration of the subtle changes in communication that can yield significant returns in patient engagement and health outcomes.

The course utilises video case studies and features a podcast on leadership and communication with leadership experts Julia van Grass and Steph Clarke from leadership specialists Spiique. The podcast can also be accessed via the Pharmacy Business and Career Network Podcast channel.

This activity has been accredited for 1 hour of Group 1 CPD (or 1 CPD credit), suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan, which can be converted to 1 hour of Group 2 CPD (or 2 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.
