League Legends set for Coalfields clash

Footy fever is set to hit Isaac communities when former rugby league legends take the field in Moranbah for a charity clash competing for the Ethan Stevens Memorial Cup this October.

Isaac Regional Council has once again backed the International Legends of League to stage an exhibition game with Anglo American All Stars taking the field against Vitrinite Brighter Coal Moranbah Miners team at Darryl Brooke Oval Saturday, 14 October 2023.

Mayor Anne Baker said the overwhelming community response and youth engagement confirmed there was significant value in bringing events like this to region.

“Our residents love for footy runs deep and when you match a legendary clash like this with programs that support our young people it is a win for everyone,” Mayor Baker said.

“The International Legends of League will be out across the region visiting schools to talk about bullying, the potential dangers of social media, youth suicide, health, wellbeing, and promoting self-confidence with sharing their philosophy of dream, believe, achieve.

“School visits include Moranbah, Dysart, Middlemount, Glenden, Clermont and Nebo with youth across the region getting the chance to learn from famous footballers.”

Deputy Mayor Kelly Vea Vea, who is the chair of the Planning, Environment and Community Services standing committee, said the event played an important role in bringing community together and providing much needed funds to local community groups.

“The Family Fun Event is set be a cracker day of footy as former rugby league greats play against our local side which will comprise of former players from local teams aged over 35,” Cr Vea Vea said.

“During the last event we saw people from across Isaac travel to join the action so I encourage everyone to mark the dates in their calendar and bring the whole family.

“Profits from the event will be donated to a local charity and local sporting groups operating food and beverage canteens retain its profits.”Cr Vea Vea said.

International Legends of League have delivered events in more than 60 rural and regional communities spreading their message and passion for rugby league.

The event is made possible with the support of the Queensland Government.
